Archant reduces dimensions of regional newspapers to save £500k

LONDON - Archant has reduced the size of the 63 regional newspapers printed at its Thorpe Print Centre in an attempt to save £500,000 a year.

Under the cost-cutting initiative, the height of the group's four daily and 59 weeklies will shrink from 394mm to 375mm, although no content has been lost and all font sizes have stayed the same.

Nick Schiller, managing director of Archant Print, confirmed all templates and page designs have had to be adjusted and there have been "subtle changes" to sizing, spacing and layout.

He said editorial production teams across the group worked together to create the new size and templates.

John Ford, production director, said the sizes of newspapers are shrinking nationally and regionally, so Archant is behaving "very fashionably" in doing this.

He added that the company has increased revenue by redesigning and the savings are so great that Archant "just might do it again".


Separately, Archant is to reduce the number of editorial job cuts at its  Norfolk division to 34 rather than the 54 originally reported. This is believed
