AOL's Case calls on France and Germany <BR>to lower internet access fees

LONDON - Steve Case, chairman of AOL Time Warner, has called for the cost of unlimited monthly internet access to be lowered in France and Germany.

Internet connections fees for unlimited monthly access are currently more expensive in France and Germany than they are in the UK.

"In France and Germany, interconnection fees based on the actual access costs are still not a reality, despite evidence that telecom operators are the major beneficiaries of the development of unlimited access," Case said in an interview with French newspaper Le Monde.

Case used the UK's prices as an example, saying that if European operators followed the UK example "which offers affordable access for everyone, the internet and electronic commerce will take off [in Europe] as it has in the US".

Case said the development of unlimited internet access is necessary to "really stimulate" Europe, and that internet use "can not expand when customers are charged for each minute of use".
