The trial site launches today (12 May), but will be fully rolled out over the summer. The homepage aims to replicate the success of the site in the US. Since its relaunch in September 2008, page views increased 7% and total minutes per user were up 26% year on year.
For the first time, AOL users will be able to check their Google Mail, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and AOL Mail and access Instant Messenger from one interface. They will also be able to post status updates and access profile activity information from services such as Instant Messenger, Bebo, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
Short-form video content powered by Truveo is also available, although Dana Dune, AOL Europe chief executive, said the company was looking into rolling out long-form content on the site.
Platform-A will support the site's advertising. while eBay will be the only launch advertiser. Advertisers will be able purchase customised re-skins, rich media options and content integration opportunities. Advertisers also have the opportunity to buy targeted text links under every section, including news, entertainment and sport.
The site will initially relaunch in the UK, with a roll-out expected across the rest of Europe if the relaunch is successful.
