Aegon hosts tennis trophy design competition

LONDON - Aegon has launched a competition for UK design students to create the new runner-up trophy for the grass court tennis tournament, the Aegon Championships.

Students from six of the UK's leading art colleges will compete for the opportunity to create the new trophy, a £500 prize and an invitation to attend the finals to see the runner-up trophy awarded for the first time since the tournament began in 1979.

The six participating colleges are:

  • Birmingham Institute of Art and Design
  • Edinburgh College of Art
  • Glasgow School of Art
  • Leeds College of Art and Design
  • Liverpool School of Art and Design
  • Wimbledon College of Art

Formerly known as the Artois Championships before InBev with the Lawn Tennis Association in September, the Aegon Championships will be held at Queen's Club in London June 8-14 2009.

Aegon's five-year £30m sponsorship of British tennis will commence in January.

Steve Clode, director of marketing and customer strategy at Aegon UK, said: "As the first ever lead partner of British tennis, Aegon will be helping develop the sport at all levels.

"The design competition allows us to provide a developing artist with the opportunity to showcase their talent to the world of sports fans."

At last year's tournament, French Open champ Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic to claim his first grass court title, joining McEnroe, Becker, Sampras and Roddick as Queen's Club winners.
