Administrator 'likely' to put ITV Digital up for sale

LONDON - The administrator of ITV Digital is looking 'likely' to put the business up for sale, having failed to reach an agreement with the Football League over the disputed £315m TV rights contract.

According to sources quoted by Reuters, the administrator Deloitte & Touche will give a progress report today about talks with the league and will recommend the business be sold.

Last week, the administrator was given a week by the High Court to negotiate a settlement with the league. Following talks on Friday, it has emerged that the two have failed to come to an agreement.

It was reported at the weekend that the Football League would accept a payment of £89m from ITV Digital to put an end to the long-running crisis. This would have given the league half of the £178m it is owed by ITV Digital plus the rights to the matches.

ITV Digital initially signed a three-year £315m deal with the Football League to televise league division football matches. It made an initial payment of £48m when the deal was signed plus £89m last summer.

If the business is sold it looks likely that the league will press ahead with its threatened £500m legal battle against ITV Digital's parents Carlton Communications and Granada.

Carlton and Granada washed their hands of responsibility for the deal, arguing that the part of the contract involving them was never signed. The league says it will seek the outstanding £178m plus compensation for revenues clubs will lose if their matches are not televised.
