League unites in stance against ITV Digital

LONDON - The chairmen of the UK's 72 Football League clubs have agreed to present a united front in their fight against ITV Digital, which could result in the broadcaster being placed into liquidation next week.

The chairmen met today at Manchester City's Maine Road ground expecting to discuss the latest offer from ITV Digital. However, last night ITV Digital's administrator Deloitte & Touche withdrew its most recent £74m offer.

This left league chairmen to discuss what course of action they would take next.

Bradford City chairman Geoffrey Richmond, a member of the league board, said the league is prepared to continue talking. However, he added that the teams were united in their resolution to take ITV Digital parents Carlton Communications and Granada to court to recover the outstanding £178m, plus loss of earnings, that the league is owed as part of its three-year deal.

Richmond said: "We are prepared for legal action, but that is a last resort."

The decision by Deloitte to withdraw the £74m offer has fuelled speculation that ITV Digital will go into liquidation on Friday.

The adminstrator last night issued a statement saying that, while it sought to establish whether the company can be saved, it was preparing the business for sale.
