The work was carried out as part of , which is due for completion in 2010.

The first phase of the redevelopment - the creation of a new foyer area in the Convention Complex - is already finished and will welcome David Cameron and the Conservative Party next month for their annual conference.

The second phase of the programme is now underway and will see a new and extended foyer area added to the Grade ll listed Central Hall as well as additional seminar spaces and catering facilities.

"The iconic entrance to Manchester Central has been one of the city's best-known ‘doorways' for business and leisure for over 20 years," said Manchester Central chief executive Lesley Tomlinson.

"With the addition of the new Central Foyer we are giving the venue a 21st century face-lift and welcoming in an exciting new era as Manchester Central becomes bigger and better than ever before."
