Nearly 300 guests were treated to a champagne reception in the museum's corridors, followed by an unusual twist on canapés, which were served on mini plates at tables while the nominations were announced.

The catering from Moving Venue included rump of lamb with smoked aubergine puree, followed by a blackberry blancmanche with red wine granita.

Tables around the 26-metre cast of a Diplodocus were illuminated by white flower displays in glass fishbowls from Designer Flowers.

The ceremony was hosted by eco lifestyle campaigner Jo Wood and wildlife expert Mark Carwardine.

The overall winner was Daniel Beltrá from Spain for ‘still life in oil’, a shot of eight pelicans covered in crude oil at a rescue facility in Louisiana.
