The Cross Platform Certificate of Circulation will come into effect from January next year and follows an agreement reached by members of the PPA, the trade body for consumer and business magazines.

Publishers can disclose their print circulations and the circulations of their digital editions, for example iPad magazines, mobile apps and email newsletters, on one certificate.

The move does not impact on magazine publishers' ABCe figures, which measure the performance of magazine websites and are published on an ad hoc basis by publishers.

The ABC, the body which audits magazine circulations, said the move was prompted by the growth of digital offshoot brands. The ABC said: "it is crucial that we support the industry in promoting the growth of their digital offering".

Magazine publishers, , have launched versions of the title on the Apple iPad in an effort to lure in more readers.

Currently, magazine publishers’ audited figures for their print titles are published every six months.

ABC said it was discussing similar measures with the newspaper industry.
