3 appoints Sony's Pepler to brand communications role

LONDON - Mobile phone company 3 has recruited Gary Pepler as director of brand and marketing communications, taking the responsibilities previously held by chief operations officer Gareth Jones, who left in November.

In the new in-house role, Pepler will lead the branding and marketing communications strategy, a role previously filled by Julian Hough, founding partner at WCRS.

Pepler joins the company, owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa group, from Sony Europe, where he was director of marketing communications for Sony Europe. Prior to that he was director of global advertising at Nortel Networks.

Pepler said: "The opportunity at 3 is immense, there's no other business or industry where communications, entertainment and information are converging in a way that brings so many benefits to the customer."

Reporting to Graeme Oxby, 3's marketing director, Pepler will be responsible for 3's brand, advertising and marketing communications and strengthening its position in the UK.

Oxby said: "3 has a unique opportunity to set itself apart from the old networks with exciting products and services and a brand for the mobile generation."

Morgan Holt has also joined the telecoms company as director of television, music and internet from independent TV production company Endemol.

Holt said: "3 is already far ahead in its desire to understand its customers. My aim is to develop a widely skilled team to marry the creative community with the mobile audience.'

The two appointments follow a restructuring of 3's senior management team at the end of last year.

As chief operating officer, Gareth Jones was one of the senior executives credited with the 3G phone network's revival, but left suddenly at the end of last year.

In January, the company recruited Bruno Duarte as strategy director and in May promoted Gordon Webber to business development director.
