The application for temporary use of the area includes use of St. James’s Park and The Mall.
Official 2012 suppliers Populous and Atkins are working on the project, which inlcudes provision for video screens and designs that are 'sympathetic' to the venue's historic surroundings.
If accepted the London 2012 Olympics venue will include two warm-up courts and floodlights in Horse Guards Parade, six practice courts in St James’s Park and stands along the Mall.
The permission would allow set-up, event and removal between early June 2012 and end September 2012 as well as a test event in August 2011.
"We have designed and will create, a sporting arena where you would least expect it in the heart of historic London. In a six week period, Horse Guards Parade will not only be the venue for the pageantry and spectacle of Trooping of the Colour and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, but it will host Beach Volleyball for the London 2012 Games," said Populous principal Jeff Keas.
"The temporary structure itself is similar in size and scale to Wimbledon’s Centre Court – with a unique seating bowl that opens out to the city and will provide an amazing setting for Beach Volleyball."
LOCOG director of venues and infrastructure James Bulley lauded the designs:
"Whilst for many the emphasis of the Games will be at the Olympic Park in East London, our aim is for London to play a starring role in the Games," said Bulley.
