Back to the future: When Sorrell met MediaMonks
Just months after leaving WPP, Sir Martin Sorrell stunned the ad industry by setting up S4 Capital, merging it with MediaMonks and listing the group on the London stock market.
In an exclusive Breakfast Briefing that coincided with 北京赛车pk10鈥檚 50th anniversary, Sorrell and MediaMonks CEO Victor Knaap spoke on-stage together for the first time.
北京赛车pk10 quized Sir Martin about his long career in advertising and found out about S4 Capital鈥檚 ambitious plans to disrupt digital marketing services at the breakfast, called 鈥淏ack to the future: When Sorrell met MediaMonks,鈥 that was in association with Results International, the leading adviser of M&A.

Sir Martin Sorrell
S4 Capital, executive chairman and Senior Monk, MediaMonks
Sir Martin is the founder of S4Capital, a newly funded vehicle with the objective of building a new age, new era, digital advertising and marketing services platform for clients. He was previously chief executive of WPP for 33 years, building it from a 拢1 million 鈥渟hell鈥 company in 1985 into the world鈥檚 largest advertising and marketing services company, with a market capitalisation of over 拢16 billion, revenues of over 拢15 billion, profits of approximately 拢2 billion and over 200,000 people in 113 countries. Prior to that, Sir Martin was group financial director of Saatchi & Saatchi and worked for James Gulliver, Mark McCormack and Glendinning Associates. He is married to Lady Cristiana Falcone-Sorrell and has four children and seven grand-children.

Victor Knaap
Main Monk and chief executive, MediaMonks
Victor is the Main Monk of MediaMonks. After sailing around the world for a living, Victor became a foundational member of MediaMonks in 2003, turning a basement boutique into a global business. Under his direction, MediaMonks mushroomed to become one of the world鈥檚 most successful creative production companies, employing 800 Monks spread across 11 international offices. MediaMonks鈥 work for agencies, brands and tech companies has won 128 Cannes Lions and more than 200 Favourite Website Awards for advertising and craft around the world.

David Abraham
Chief executive and co-founder, Wonderhood Studios
David launched Wonderhood Studios in 2018 as a new kind of creative company that combines programme making with creative agency skills. He led Channel 4 as chief executive between 2010 and 2017, leading a major creative overhaul, increasing annual revenues to 拢1bn and pioneering a data strategy that attracted over 15m registered users. David was previously chief executive of UKTV between 2007 and 2010 where he masterminded the launch of Dave; president and general manager of Discovery Networks USA; general manager of Discovery Networks UK; and a founding partner of the independent advertising agency St Luke鈥檚, named as one of the top 20 best agencies of all time in 北京赛车pk10鈥檚 50th anniversary edition.

Ben Jeffries
Founder and chief executive, Influencer
Ben is a 22-year-old entrepreneur, specialising in influencer marketing and social media. He founded Influencer in 2015 as an influencer marketing company and raised a first round of investment on Crowdcube in under 24 hours. He went on to partner with YouTube sensation Caspar Lee, appointing him CMO, and closed a further 拢500,000 investment round. He won Rising Star (media owner) at the Media Week Awards 2018. Ben was 15 when he set up his first business, Breeze, a clothing company that enjoyed modest success but inspired him to drop out of Bath University.

Julie Langley
Partner, Results International
Julie has over 20 years鈥 experience advising technology, marketing and digital media companies on M&A and fundraising. She moved to Results from US investment bank Jefferies where she was a managing director in the European technology practice. Julie has spent most of her career working with entrepreneur-owned and private-equity backed businesses. Her most notable deals at Results include advising Oxyma on its sale to Dentsu/Merkle, RedPixie on its sale to Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Sonalytic on its sale to Spotify, The App Business on its sale to St Ives plc, Captify on its 拢8m Series B fundraising with Smedvig, DC Storm on its sale to Rakuten and Amaze on its sale to St Ives.

Nicola Mendelsohn
Vice president, Facebook EMEA
Nicola has been the vice president for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for Facebook since 2013. She is also a non-executive director of Diageo and serves on The Mayor of London鈥檚 Business Advisory Board. Nicola has been awarded a CBE and previously served as co-chair of the Creative Industries Council alongside Secretaries of State for DCMS and BEIS. Nicola was also the first woman to be President of the IPA. She began her career in advertising at BBH then moving to be deputy Chairman of Grey London. In 2008, she became executive chairman Karmarama.

Gideon Spanier

Gideon is global head of media at 北京赛车pk10 where he has worked since 2015, overseeing media coverage and events, including the Media Week Awards and Media360. He is also a columnist for the London Evening Standard and a member of the executive committee of the Broadcasting Press Guild, a national association of journalists who cover the TV and radio industries. He was previously media editor of the London Evening Standard, a business reporter for The Times and The Independent and chair of the BPG.

Lorna Tilbian
Non-executive director, M&C Saatchi and Rightmove
Lorna is an independent director of a number of leading, listed companies including M&C Saatchi, Rightmove and Euromoney Institutional Investor. She was previously executive director and head of media at Numis Corporation until December 2017. She was a founder of Numis when it launched in 2001, having earlier worked at Sheppards, SG Warburg and WestLB Panmure. Lorna was a top-ranked media analyst by Institutional Investor and Thomson Reuters Extel for 25 years. Lorna sits on the advisory panel of Tech Nation's Future Fifty programme and has served as a Cabinet Ambassador for Creative Britain for the Department of Culture, Media & Sport.

James Thompson
Chief Brand and Beauty Officer, Avon
James is the newly appointed chief Brand and Beauty Officer at Avon, a globally recognised leader in direct selling of beauty and related products. He has recently returned to the UK from New York where he was Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer for Diageo North America where he played a lead role in returning that business to growth. He was previously Managing Director for Reserve, Diageo鈥檚 luxury portfolio, and between 2007 and 2012 was Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer in Asia Pacific. James started his career in Unilever, working in the UK, US and Europe. He has been a regular columnist for 北京赛车pk10 Asia Pacific, has been an Effies Judge and twice chaired the Asia Marketing Effectiveness Awards Jury.
