The appointment was made by Associated chief Kevin Beatty and gives Zitter a vastly expanded role, which includes heading the two Mail newspapers, the digital activities for the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, the Daily Mail's activity in Ireland, and publications in India.
The group, which made the announcement internally today, is still recruiting for the role of managing director of The Mail on Sunday, a position held by Stephen Miron who is expected to depart the group in the coming weeks before joining Global Radio as chief executive.
Zitter's promotion means the managing director role is likely to be vastly diminished from the one held by Miron.
