The Google-owned site has revealed plans to set up a subscription service in an email to channel owners, according to the Guardian.

YouTube has told channel owners that if they don’t join the service, they will have to make sure their videos are set to "private". Media owners have been given a deadline of June 15 to sign up by.

It is unclear when the service will launch or how much it will cost.

YouTube would follow the likes of Spotify in offering users a way of streaming content without ads.

The email read: "We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favour of choice: offering fans an ad-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee.

"By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast-growing advertising revenue."
