This is according to the organisers, which said within ten weeks, more than 2,600 tickets have been sold or allocated.

Gross ticket sales are set to reach £20,000 for the first time in the festival's seven-year history, with eight events in the programme now sold out. Last year, the festival had sold around 1,300 tickets by early March.

The 2014 festival is set to feature a host of literary talent including Germaine Greer, John Humphrys and Roger McGough, with events taking place at a number of venues in the city, including the York Theatre Royal.

"It's been a fantastic response, proving the quality of the 2014 programme," said festival director Miles Salter. "It's also due to improved marketing. We have been working with a wide variety of local organisations such as York St John University, York Theatre Royal, Visit York, St Peter's School, York Press, BBC Radio York and York Mix, which has helped us reach a wider audience this time. We have also had a lot more website hits than in previous years."

The event is being sponsored by York St John University and additional funding is being supplied by the Arts Council, Clore Duffield Trust and Community York Fund.
