Ymuno looks to Kickstarter for its future

Welsh funk and folk festival Ymuno is taking to Kickstarter in an attempt to be the first UK festival to be entirely pre-funded by ticket sales.

The event is seeking to raise £14,000 by 28 April to secure this year’s festival, which will take place at Bryn Ffanigl Farm near Abergele on 5-7 July. If the target is not reached, the event is unlikely to take place this year.

It is the latest event to use the crowdfunding model to finance a festival. Alt-Fest recently raised £61,672 on the platform and South London’s Leefest is trying to become self-sustaining with a £50,000 round of funding.

Donors through Kickstarter can pledge funds to a choice of ticket options. The festival needs to have pledges for 200 full price tickets to meet its target.

The last time the festival was staged in 2011 it was given a grant from the Welsh Government’s Rural Development Fund, however this funding is no longer available.

Organiser Asher Awelan said the crowd-funding approach is the ultimate in audience participation. "This way of fundraising suits the ethos of Ymuno, which in Welsh means to join and to come together. It makes perfect sense for us to widen the ownership of and investment in the event."

This year’s event promises a line-up including former Magic Numbers member Michele Stodart, Neil McSweeney, Banda Bacana and Drymbago.
