World Cup: 1998 final seen by 1bn

Yahoo! is to run the Fifa websites for the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan as well as the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The multi-lingual Fifa World Cup site will be called FIFAworldcup.com and will be produced, marketed, sold and hosted by Yahoo!.

The deal sees Yahoo! become one of the 15 official worldwide Fifa partners and will see the company offer both free and premium pay-per-view services.

It will provide up-to-date information and extensive Fifa World Cup resources regardless of location or time zone.

The Fifa World Cup website will be available in six languages - English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French and German.

Yahoo! managing director of UK & Ireland Martina King said: "We have, for the first time, the opportunity to make the best use of our global platform.

"Our audience has, up until now, been built on local businesses, but for the first time the World Cup will pull together Yahoo!'s new global audience."

The 2002 World Cup is expected to be one of the biggest tournaments ever.

The 1998 event in France drew a television audience of more than 33 billion viewers for its 64 matches.

The last World Cup's official website registered 1.1 billion page views during the 33 days of the event.
