Yahoo! reports leap in advertising revenues

LONDON - Internet company Yahoo! is predicting a 22% jump in advertising revenues for the fourth quarter, on the back of an increase in sponsored searches.

Overall, Yahoo! said that it expects to report a 30% jump in revenues for 2002 following a rise in advertising revenues and the introduction of charges for premium services.

The company said revenues were set to hit between $930m (拢587.6m) and $955m for the full year, up from $717m, boosted by a predicted 22% rise in fourth-quarter advertising revenues.

The company said the outlook for 2003 was positive with revenues forecast to jump 20% to as much $1.18bn.

However, despite the strong performance of Yahoo!'s advertising business it was outperformed by the internet's listings business and fees business, which includes internet access and premium services. This grew by 124%.

The diversification away from advertising has helped Yahoo! improve its performance. It's reliance on advertising, once 90%, now stands at 59%.

The company is set to see advertising grow another 20% in 2003, according to CEO Terry Semel.

Yahoo! also expects to see revenues rise from an increase in paying customers. It expects to have 2m paying users by the year's end and 10m in three to four years.
