Yahoo! helps stamp out spam with rubbish education

LONDON - Yahoo! is running an anti-spam initiative in the UK to encourage British web users to 'dump the junk', including printing advice on beating spam on rubbish bags.

The ISP has roped in former 'EastEnders' star Dean Gaffney, who played street cleaner Robbie Jackson, and is using branded dustcarts, binmen and garbage bags to promote the initiative. Yahoo! says it is the first time that residents in the UK are being targeted via their rubbish.

Yahoo! has also set up a to help web users cut the amount of spam they receive in their inboxes. Tips include not responding to junk email and not falling for "personalised" subject lines. The UK's worst offenders can be reported at dumpthejunkaward@yahoo.co.uk.

Yahoo! has done a survey finding 94% of British web users find junk mail hugely annoying, but that 56% of people unwittingly perpetuated the cycle by replying to spam.

It also discovered that 2% of users have made a purchase in response to junk mail.

John Webb, head of Yahoo! Mail in the UK, said: "Lack of know-how and the feeling of junk mail fatigue in the UK has inspired us to help educate the public and businesses. We don't want to be in a situation where the number of junk mails sent overtakes solicited emails.

"Our trial media-firsts of teaching people the perils of junk mail through their rubbish will hopefully help reduce this online burden."

Yahoo! Mail catches and blocks an estimated 1bn items of spam every day, and 40% of the world's email messages are thought to be junk emails.

In the US, Yahoo! has joined forces with Microsoft and AOL to help stamp out spam.
