Xfm enters battle for Sunday evening chart listeners

LONDON - Alternative radio station Xfm is entering the top 40 Sunday chart show battle with the move of its 'Music:Response' listener-based show to 4pm-7pm.

The show, which allows listeners to vote for their top 20 tracks being played on the station that week, is currently aired at 12noon-2pm on Sunday afternoons.

However, the Capital Radio Group-owned music station is set to extend the show by an extra hour.

The move will allow 'Music:Response' to compete directly with commercial chart-based shows including sister station Capital Radio, which broadcasts the Hit 40 UK chart at this time. This is the biggest chart in the UK with around 3m listeners, and is backed by Capital Radio, GWR, Scottish Radio Holdings and Chrysalis.

The second biggest is the BBC's 'Top 40' chart show on Radio 1 with an audience of around 2.5m. Kiss FM-owner Emap also has its own chart, the 'Smash Hits' chart show, which airs to around 1m.

The Xfm show is currently hosted by Ian Camfield, who took over after Zane Lowe jumped ship for Radio 1 in March to present the station's 'Evening Session'.

In a separate announcement, Richard Bacon is to become the second Xfm DJ to front his own show on TV channel Five. The former 'Blue Peter' presenter has been given a quiz show called '19 Keys', a general knowledge quiz show with a cash prize.

Bacon follows in the footsteps of Xfm breakfast show host Christian O'Connell, who has his own show, which is produced by Chris Evans' TV company UMTV.

Coincidentally, Bacon is currently presenting O'Connell's Five show while the Xfm morning presenter takes a leave of, as yet unexplained, absence.
