Wogan and Edmonds are the most obvious radio-to-TV successes, with Tarrant and Ross having gone the other way.
But Christian O'Connell looks like he's one of those rare cross-overs.
The former stand-up comic, now XFM Breakfast host, has recently moved into telly with his daily Live show on Five at 7pm.
O'Connell looks comfortable with the medium and only the time of day stops him transferring the very best of his radio work to pre-watershed TV.
The difficulty most radio people have is taking the intimacy of one-to-one radio communication to a bigger TV audience, especially when there is a baying hoard of 'I'm on the telly' studio kids distracting both the viewer and the presenter.
Although O'Connell looked fazed by this at first, he's past it now and, like his radio show, the momentum and word of mouth this show is garnering will take it on to the ratings that Five needs in this time slot.
Chris Evans, who hired O'Connell for this UMTV-produced show and who knows a good thing when he sees it, was taken by the presenter's self-deprecating style on the radio.
If O'Connell continues to successfully transfer his act from radio to telly, there is no doubt that other networks will be taken by his style too. Watch this space.
