X Factor triumphs over Strictly in Saturday evening ratings

LONDON - ITV1 has won round one of the Saturday evening reality TV ratings war, with 'The X Factor' managing to pull in an audience of 10.7m at its peak versus 8.7m for BBC One's 'Strictly Come Dancing'.

The BBC has been criticised for pitting 'Strictly Come Dancing' directly against 'The X Factor', with fans of the shows being forced to choose which one to watch live.

However, the decision appeared to have backfired, with 'The X Factor' coming out the clear favourite in unofficial overnight figures. The two shows are scheduled to clash again next week, with an hour overlap between 8pm and 9pm.

'Strictly Come Dancing' producers have also faced criticism for replacing one of the original judges, 66-year-old Arlene Phillips, who is a choreographer and former dance professional, with 30-year-old Alesha Dixon, a previous winner of the show.

Dixon's performance on Saturday evening has drawn criticism from fans of the show, who feel she is not up to the job of passing comment on the intricacies of ballroom dance.

However Dixon has said that she plans to continue as a judge and that her job is to provide the perspective of someone who knows how it feels to perform on the show.

Strictly has also been criticised for having too much padding. Although the Sunday evening results show has been ditched, the Saturday evening show ran for 100 minutes and was preceded by a 90-minute-long preview show on Friday night.

Martina Hingis, the former tennis champion who was been banned for taking cocaine, was the first contestant to be evicted from 'Strictly Come Dancing'. Ricky Whittle, an actor on 'Hollyoaks', is current favourite to win, according to Paddy Power.

'The X Factor' has also angered fans with a change to its format, as auditions have been held in front of live audiences instead of just in front of the judges.

The audition phase of the show is now over, with successful candidates through to the "boot camp" phase of the competition.
