In a story, the Mirror this morning accused Murdoch of exporting his "all-out homophobic assault" to New York as the Murdoch-owned New York Post and Fox News led the attack on the former butler to Princess Diana.
The Mirror dubbed the Post a "tawdry American newspaper" as it reported on the paper's coverage, which referred to Burrell as the "Queen of Mean" and sneered he was a "rat", "revolting" and "Burrell the Bum".
The Mirror, which beat The Sun and the Daily Mail to Burrell's story, has been running trade ads this week celebrating its coverage, claiming "The butler came through for us" and that the paper put on 2m copies as a result of its extensive and exhaustive coverage.
The ads have been accompanied by a quote from Burrell, saying: "I trusted the Daily Mirror to tell my true story and they didn't let me down."
Burrell has been in the US this week and has received a rough ride from the US media. It is expected he is set to make more royal revelations in an interview on ABC.
According to the Mirror, Murdoch's US news channel Fox ran endless ill-informed speculation on "Burrell's sexuality and little on the implications of his story for the royals".
Despite the story's move to the US, the Mirror still managed to heap some blame on The Sun, saying that the coverage began in its rival and its sister paper the News of the World. It accused the two British tabloids of being unable to "contain their fury at missing out on the scoop of the century", adding "they fought back in the only way they knew how".
The Mirror accuses The Sun, which under editor David Yelland has tried to distance itself from its former homophobic image, of indulging in hints and innuendo and cites The Sun's printing of a photograph of Burrell next to Danny La Rue and referring to his "feminine side". The Mirror says it makes a mockery of Yelland's claim that his paper would "not indulge in prejudices against women or minorities".
However, the Mirror does note that the "anti-gay tone" has dismayed some who, it says, are "forced to work within Murdoch's empire".
