Wyclef Jean to turn his life into comedy series for HBO

NEW YORK - The musician Wyclef Jean, one of the founders of The Fugees, is to write and star in a sitcom loosely based on his life, to be produced by HBO.

According to reports, the programme is in the early stages of development. Jean is working with the writers Seth Rosenfeld and Danny Hoch, who created an earlier HBO series called 'Subway: Tales from the Underground'.

Jean, who describes himself as a hip-hop musician, being from a reggae background and of Haitian descent, is also set to produce original music for the new series.

He hit the big time in 1996, when The Fugees released 'The Score'. More recently, he has branched out to add acting to his CV, starring as Curtis Mayfield in the NBC series 'American Dreams' and appearing in the forthcoming feature film 'Dirty'.

HBO is behind programmes including 'Sex and the City', 'The Sopranos' and also screens 'Da Ali G Show'. Jean's fellow musician P Diddy has also worked for the network, on the show 'P Diddy presents the Bad Boys of Comedy'.

There is likely to be a fierce bidding war for the show in the UK with Channel 4, BBC and Five all interested.
