WPP's Sorrell moves up in The Sunday Times Rich List

LONDON - The UK ad industry leader Sir Martin Sorrell is estimated to have a fortune of £115m, up £30m from last year, according to the The Sunday Times Rich List, but his wealth is eclipsed by Express Newspaper's owner Richard Desmond, who is worth £1.9bn.

The Sunday Times Rich List ranked Sorrell as the 608th wealthiest person in the UK, climbing 72 places from 680th in 2006.

Richard Desmond, owner of Express Newspapers, has come top among media owners, with an estimated fortune of £1.9bn, making him the 25th richest person in the UK. He has slipped three places from last year.

Desmond is closely followed by Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, listed at number 30 with a fortune totalling £1.8bn. The owners of the Telegraph Group and The Ritz acquired the former Peugeot plant in Coventry last year for £60m to grow their internet sales and mail order business.

Viscount Cowdray and the Pearson family come in 91st, with assets in the region of £781m. Viscount Cowdray has a £30m 10% stake in Financial Times publisher Pearson.

Dennis Publishing owner Felix Dennis is 95th, with £750m. Dennis has grown his fortune from £715m last year but has dropped nine places from last year's list. He recently put many of his US magazines up for sale.

The UK's richest person is Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who has a £19.3bn fortune. He is followed by Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea FC, in second place with £10.8bn. The Duke of Westminster, who steps down as chairman of the Grosvenor Group this week, completes the top three with £7bn.
