WPP chief Weber to sue Sunday Times over Benatti link

LONDON - Daniela Weber, the WPP Italy chief operating officer, is suing The Sunday Times over allegations she had a relationship with the agency's former manager Marco Benatti who was fired over alleged financial irregularities.

Weber is taking libel action against the paper, claiming damages and false privacy over two Sunday Times articles published in January and February this year.

The articles "Lawyers probe Italian job at Sorrell's WPP" and "Benattigate takes a new twist" cite allegations that Weber had a relationship with Benatti, which she vehemently denies.

Despite The Sunday Times running an apology on its business section apologising for "the distress and embarrassment caused," she is pressing on with her lawsuit.

Benatti has also denied the reports that he had a relationship with Weber.

Sir Martin Sorrell, WPP chief executive, dismissed Benatti on January 9 for failing to disclose that he owned a stake in Media Club, an agency bought by WPP.

The group has since opened an investigation into possible fraud at its media buying operations in Italy.
