The Daily Telegraph reports today that Benatti has criticised the actions of Sorrell, who sacked him on January 9, saying that he feels "betrayed".
"A lot of WPP clients are shocked by this situation. There are many ways to divorce but the one Martin chose for me is the worse that a communications man can choose, because it is damaging for me and also WPP. Martin does not have my respect," Benatti is quoted as saying in the Telegraph.
The scandal that led to his abrupt departure concerns the Italian agency Mediaclub, which was bought by WPP three years ago for £14m.
WPP said that unbeknown to it, Benatti was a majority owner of Mediaclub and controlled it through a network of offshore trusts.
Benatti has denied this, saying that he only indirectly owned a small stake in Mediaclub through a Scottish investment fund in which he had invested since 1999.
Benatti said: "I had sold a company and my brother suggested that I put the money in this trust. I am a businessman, my brother is a banker. Sometimes I sought his advice. But the suggestion we have a network of offshore trusts is rubbish. Mediaclub was a really good deal for WPP."
Benatti's brother Vittorio is now also a part of WPP's investigation into the matter.
In addition, Benatti has denied reports that he had a relationship with Daniela Weber, chief operating officer of WPP in Italy, a woman with whom Sir Martin is also have reported to been romantically involved.
Philip Lader, chairman of WPP, has taken steps to assure investors that the company is "taking every step to ensure a thorough investigation".
The company has brought in corporate investigators Kroll to examine the affair.
