Worldpride takes place at least once every five years in a different city worldwide. The last one was held in Jerusalem in 2006 and the next one will be in Toronto in 2014.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community from across the globe is expected to descend on the city for two weeks for a festival of art, culture and campaigning culminating with a parade through central London on Saturday 7 July.
Registration for walking groups and floats to take part in the parade opened today. Headline sponsor Smirnoff has already confirmed it will be entering a float in this year’s line-up.
On parade day Soho will be full of attractions including a dance stage, a chilled-out family area, a market place and a one-off dance party featuring international DJs.
Pride London will also be hosting a conference at Senate House to discuss the issues facing the global LGBT community today. The central theme of the fortnight will be to call for the global decriminalisation of homosexuality, especially within the Commonwealth.
Patrick Williams, chair of Pride London, said: "Pride London is honoured to have been chosen to host Worldpride this year and we can’t wait to show the world everything the city has to offer."
Williams added: "This summer we want to give the global LGBT a safe place to celebrate and be proud regardless of who they love, but we will also be using our time in the spotlight to campaign for a safer environment for them to return to."
