Wippit believes that everyone will benefit from the move to reduce the price of the charity single, which was yesterday confirmed as the Christmas Number 1.
Wippit said that as a result of its move, the Band Aid Trust will receive more sales because the price has been brought to a more acceptable level, while the consumer gets a great song and makes a charity donation.
Pail Myers, chief executive and founder of Wippit, said: "We don't have singles at £1.49, so we're pleased to be going out at 49p and paying the difference out of our own pockets. If it means making a loss on every Band Aid 20 download, what better reason for doing this? We want to be the site that sells more than any other, no matter what the cost."
Rob Wells, divisional director at Universal Music, added: "We're extremely happy to have Wippit on board as a download partner and it's great to see them support the Band Aid single."
