Mktg - Hi. I'm just calling up about getting Swift Cover insurance on my car. The only problem I've got is I was talking to a mate last night and he said you don't insure entertainers or something. So I just wanted to know if I was eligible.
Swiftcover - What is it you do?
Mktg - Well, it sounds a bit strange, but I'm a multi-instrumentalist. There are two of us and we go around schools, old people homes and things like that. I do play the keyboard, drums....
Swiftcover - Right, so you're a multi-instrumentalist?
Mktg - Yes, you could argue I'm an entertainer but I do it for educational purposes.
Swiftcover - Right, ok, is it alright if I just pop you on hold and I'll just check. I won't be a moment.
Mktg - Yes, thanks [holds].
Swiftcover - Thanks for holding there. Ok, I've just checked here, unfortunately we would class that as entertainment and we wouldn't be able to cover you.
Mktg - Could I ask why you wouldn't be able to cover me?
Swiftcover - We do have a list of occupations we don't cover, and unfortunately entertainment business is something we don't offer insurance for.
Mktg - Ok, but I'm teaching us I do it.
Swiftcover - Unfortunately we won't be able to cover your occupation, even if you did it once a month we wouldn't be able to cover you unfortunately.
Mktg - That's weird. It's disappointing. Also, isn't Iggy Pop used on your ads?
Swiftcover - Yes he is, but obviously we don't probably insure him.
Mktg - But isn't that false advertising though?
Swiftcover - Unfortunately insurance companies have a guide they have to stick to and this is something we won't cover for.
Mktg - Ok, but obviously seeing Iggy Pop, a legend, and you see him on an ad, it does attract ‘entertainers' to consider it. I thought that was the point.
Swiftcover - Unfortunately, we just don't offer cover for the entertainment business.
Mktg - Ok, so Iggy Pop isn't insured with you either?
Swiftcover - No he won't be.
Mktg - Ok, thanks, bye.
Swiftcover - Thanks, bye.
Verdict - Although the call handler was well mannered and was only doing her job explaining that I could not be insured because of company policy, she failed to explain any reason for not being eligible. The same line was read out to me on numerous occasions and I was left feeling ‘fortunate' that I was unable to insure myself with them.
