We'll Call You - Barclays

As the new academic year approaches, students are grappling with the eternal dilemma of textbooks vs beer. Mole gave Barclays a call to see if it could help.

Barclays Thank you for calling Barclays you're through to [name]. How can I help?

Mktg Hi. I was just looking for some information on setting up a student account.

Barclays OK, bear with me.

Mktg Thanks. [Holds.]

Barclays Good afternoon, you're through to [name] at the application team, how can I help you today?

Mktg I was looking for some information on a student account. I start university in two weeks.

Barclays OK, you need to open the account in a branch. Do you currently bank with us?

Mktg I don't, no.

Barclays OK. What university are you going to and what will you be studying?

Mktg [Provides details.]

Barclays Have you applied for student loan funding?

Mktg No.

Barclays You are eligible for a student account providing you are in a full-time degree course. You can apply for an overdraft of up to £3000. The first £2000 of the overdraft is interest-free. In the first year you can apply for a limit of £1500.

Mktg I've noticed that some banks offer Railcards. Do you?

Barclays Railcards only apply to those people that need to travel. We offer the internet dongles from Orange. We do a 25% discount on the three packages, which are 1GB, 3GB and 10GB. They're much more relevant things to use on a day-to-day basis.

Mktg So I'd need to go into a branch to set an account up?

Barclays Yes. You would need your confirmation of your course, your driving licence or passport, and your bank statements for the last three months.

Mktg I'll try and get there today.

Barclays Most of them work on an appointment basis, but they might be able to fit you in.

Mktg Thanks.

Barclays Is there anything else I can do for you today?

Mktg That's it, thanks.

Verdict

The second call-handler was friendly and able to talk about the details of the account without burdening me with lots of irrelevant figures. There was no hard sell and he did not ask for any details. However, I was also told I needed to go to a branch to open the account.
