Web-enabled doorbell lets you banish unwanted visitors

LONDON - Door-to-door salesmen, Avon ladies and Jehovah's Witnesses beware. Seattle-based start-up Buzzeromatic has launched a web-enabled doorbell that allows you to banish unwanted callers for good.

The VoIP technology enables people with intercom systems to enhance their doorbell so they can prompt nuisance callers to leave a voice message, create passwords for frequent visitors and admit people via SMS.

Buzzeromatic is also launching an iPhone app that will allow residents to customise their doorbell while they're out and about via an internet-enable interface,

For a monthly subscription fee Buzzeromatic users will be able to use the ‘smart' doorbell system to grant entry to guests at particular times, such as between 8am and 10am if you're expecting your cleaner or 10pm and 11pm if you've ordered a pizza.

Alternatively users who are away from home can programme their mobile number into the system to have their front door ring them when somebody calls.

Buzzeromatic, which will be free to beta users during the first phase of testing, uses Twilio, a new technology capable of integrating the web with various phone systems.
