The Brazil 2014 Fan Zone at Katara, located in Doha, launched on Saturday (28 June) and will be open for the last 16 matches of the international football tournament, until 13 July. It will screen all remaining football matches on Qatar’s largest LED panoramic screen.
The open-air venue has also been designed to give a dedicated area for football fans to escape the extreme temperatures, featuring a retractable roof and cooling technology.
Guests attending the free experience will be able to take part in human table football-style games, have their photo taken in front of a green screen and use Oculus Rift augmented reality technology, connected with a Microsoft Kinect console, to attempt to score a goal within a virtual football stadium environment.
A number of on-site activities which guests can take part in will also include radio frequency identification technology so that they can share their moments and scores online via social media platforms.
Paul Saville, vice president of Wasserman’s Experience team, which was appointed to design, construct, produce and manage the fan zone, told Event the agency wanted to created an enhanced screening experience as part of this year’s World Cup.
"Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, we were asked to deliver this fan zone as one of the first text projects and already after two days we are seeing temperatures almost ten degrees cooler than what they are outside," Saville added. "It’s all about people being able to enjoy the outdoor experience as comfortably as possible."
