The show, which is organised by the Kennel Club, attracted 138,000 guests from 10-13 March.
The NEC said the drop in attendance was due to current trends in the exhibition sector and the effects of the financial downturn.
Despite the slight drop, the show still managed to provide a much-needed boost to the local community, delivering £11.5m to the region’s economy.
This was the event's 20th year at the NEC, and covered 90,000sqm of space incorporating new features such as the Agility display, Flyball and Heelwork to Music.
