Torvald de Coverly Veale has been appointed director of VisitBritain International and will oversee the tourism body's £35.5m international marketing spend.
He has been tasked with building inbound tourism and handling promotional activity in the Americas, Asia-Pacific and parts of Europe.
His appointment comes at a key time for VisitBritain, which is gearing up to ensure the 2012 London Olympics have a positive impact on the entire UK tourism industry.
According to VisitBritain, 30m overseas tourists visited the UK in 2005.
