Virgin Radio looks to boost audience with £100,000 promotion

LONDON - Virgin Radio is to run a nationwide competition called 'Music Makes Money', offering listeners a chance to win cash for correct answers, in an attempt to boost its audience.

Listeners must register for the promotion online, answering five music-related questions to qualify. This will serve to promote not only Virgin Radio, but attract new visitors to its website.

A randomly selected applicant every hour, between 7am to midday Monday to Friday, will be asked three questions. They will win £200 for each correct answer, and by answering all three correctly will be invited back on air the following hour. Listeners can "bank" their prize money every £1,000, and will be eliminated when they give a wrong answer. All money not banked will be lost.

The first caller will be live on the 'Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show' at 7am on September 3. The competition will run for one month and pre-promotion is already under way on the station and website.

Paul Jackson, chief executive of Virgin Radio, said: "This promotion will deliver real listener engagement and provide another opportunity for us to grow reach and hours on the back of our best Rajar figures for three years."

Virgin celebrated a boost in listener numbers to 2,534,000, up 8.4% on the year and 3.5% on the quarter.
