Virgin opens soccer broadband to ads

Virgin Media is opening up its FA premier league broadband service to advertisers.

The media company recently bought full broadband rights to the FA premier league, the first time such a rights package has been made available on broadband. Virgin Media claims this is the only place online that users will be able to access all the games. Games will be available to view the day after they are played, then for the following week.

This is part of a ramped up Virgin Media sports service, aiming to "give football back to the fans".

Chris Bunyan, director of portal management, Virgin Media, said: "There's currently a gap in the online sports market, so we're inviting fans to engage and interact.

"We're looking for key advertisers for the whole service or parts of the service. Brands can buy headline sponsorship for the entire premier league broadband service, or choose from a range of sponsorable packages.

"We have an open remit, but won't be approaching financial services brands as Barclays are the league's headline sponsors. The main broadband audience will be male, cash-rich, time-poor users of our catch-up service.

"The other category is football-obsessed fans who want to get deeply involved in the league."
