Virgin Media takes Teletext Extra ad space

LONDON - Virgin Media has signed an exclusive deal with Teletext Extra, an extended version of the Teletext news and information service, to place banner advertising for its services on the Freeview platform.

The advertising will be shown across the Teletext-branded EPG, which was developed in conjunction with InView, a company controlled by the digital terrestrial pay-TV outfit Top Up TV.

Virgin Media has taken all three areas on the new Teletext Extra EPG. The recently launched entertainment channel Virgin 1 will be promoted and the top banner will be devoted to marking Virgin Media’s products and services. The campaign begins today and gives the brand some targeted exposure to the Freeview audience.

Jon King, head of marketing at Virgin Media Television, called the step an “important part of the marketing strategy for Virgin 1”.

The Teletext Extra EPG service will be available to around five million Freeview households by the end of this year through over-the-air downloads to viewers’ set-top boxes. The service will be pre-installed in new Alba/Bush set-top boxes from early 2008.
