Launching today, the VoD service offers a range of sporting content from pay-TV sports channel operator Setanta Sports, including World Cup qualifiers and England home friendlies, and is available to all Virgin’s 3.5 million cable TV subscribers, either free as part of their existing bundle or as an additional package.
Malcolm Wall, chief executive of content at Virgin Media, said the deal would further drive uptake of VoD views. The company said it has seen a significant increase in demand for VoD services over the past year and currently averages 45 million views per month, almost double the figure for January 2008.
Virgin Media is the only TV operator to offer the BBC iPlayer and recently signed a deal with ITV meaning there will be 500 hours of ITV programming to watch any time on demand.
