The agency already handles the airline's advertising account in the UK and across the majority of mainland Europe, but will now work on the company's communications across the globe.

The appointment means that Virgin Atlantic has ended its relationship with McKinney, an independent agency based in North Carolina that had worked on the company's US advertising account for the last two years.

Virgin Atlantic has also appointed GyroHSR and OMD to handle its below-the-line and media buying accounts on a global basis.

In the UK, Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R has worked on the Virgin Atlantic account for almost 15 years.

The agency recently released a TV ad for the brand called "Love at First Flight", which celebrated the airline's 25th anniversary.

Paul Dickinson, the sales and marketing director for Virgin Atlantic, said: "We have been very well supported by local agencies around the world for some years but believe the time is right to focus our strategy as we plan for a new phase of growth."
