Virgin 1 courts controversy with penis documentary

LONDON - Virgin 1, the soon-to-launch competitor to Sky One, has added a one-off documentary about the penis to its primetime schedule called 'Penis Envy'.

'Penis Envy' promises a nationwide survey to discover the average UK penis size and will investigate the popularity of plastic surgery and enlargement products. The documentary is made by TwoFour Broadcast and is sure to be controversial.

Celia Taylor, director of programming for Virgin 1, said: "'Penis Envy' will take a really candid look at what is still quite a taboo subject in Britain today and is just the start of what viewers can expect to see on Virgin 1 in the autumn as we bring the very best in bold and clever factual documentaries to the channel."

Virgin 1 will replace Ftn on Freeview and will broadcast from 6pm to 6am. It will broadcast for 24 hours on Virgin Media and satellite.

The channel has already acquired a range of US programming headed by hit US drama 'The Riches', starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver. It has also bought 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles', a TV spin-off from the 'Terminator' movies, and the 'Star Trek' franchise from 'The Next Generation' to 'Enterprise', both of which originally aired on Sky One.

Among its UK commissions is 'The Leo Houlding Project' from Ginger Productions, in which sports ace Houlding gives an adrenalin rush to people in need of excitement.
