Vegas fronts ad campaign promoting Radio 4 comedy

LONDON - BBC Radio 4 is pushing its early evening comedy schedule to younger listeners through an advertising campaign featuring comedy stars such as Johnny Vegas and Armando Iannucci.

The ads were created by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and break this weekend, running for three weeks across the BBC.

BBC Radio 4 regularly schedules comedy at 6.30pm and the aim is to let young people know about the programming. Current shows include 'The Night Class', starring Johnny Vegas as a failed Butlins redcoat teaching pottery; and 'Four at the Store', hosted by Australian comic Adam Hills and featuring up-and-coming comedians doing stand-up in front of a live audience.

In the ads, Vegas, a regular on 'Shooting Stars', pops up in a fridge to inform viewers, while Iannucci, who is behind 'The Armando Iannucci Show' and 'The Day Today', appears suddenly from a kennel. The work is being shown as a 40-second trail as well as two 30-second executions.

The campaign was written by Steve Tidball and art directed by Nick Tidball. The director is Mark Mylod, who has directed series including 'The Fast Show', 'Cold Feet' and the current Channel 4 series 'Shameless'. Production is through Tomboy.
