BBC to showcase its Christmas comedy with animated trails

The BBC is to showcase its comedy credentials in an animated campaign featuring some of its most popular characters, created by BBC Broadcast.

The theme of the on-air trails is "We've got the whole family over this year" and features caricatures of BBC comedy stars including Del Boy and Rodney, Ummi Kumar from The Kumars at No 42 and Alistair McGowan and Ronni Ancona impersonating Posh and Becks.

The spot shows the animated characters sitting around sharing a Christmas dinner and swapping jokes. In between the characters' conversations, the BBC will run clips of comedy programmes coming up across the BBC network.

The campaign launches on 6 December online and on BBC 1, 2, 3 and 4. It will also run on the BBC's national radio stations 1, 2, 4, Five Live and across its local network from 13 December.

The creative director was Ruth Shabi at BBC Broadcast and animation was through The Hive. Media planning was done in-house.

Andy Duncan, the creative services director at the BBC, said: "These trails illustrate the BBC's selection of comedy at one time in an engaging way. The animation adds a fresh slant to familiar faces. It's a creative solution that makes the trail stand out even in the Christmas schedule."
