According to figures released by UKTV, its earnings before interest taxation depreciation and amortisation were £74.1 million, up 9.9 per cent year on year and also a record.

UKTV also reported its highest-ever operating profit at £72.2 million, an increase of 9.1 per cent year on year.

The broadcaster also had a good year on screen with its largest share of commercial impacts (Soci) since launch. UKTV’s Soci was 9.0 per cent in 2014, up from 8.2 per cent in 2013.

In comparison, UKTV said other broadcasters’ Soci declined by 3.7 per cent.

UKTV Play, the video-on-demand service that launched last year, contributed to UKTV’s on-demand views surge by 348 per cent year on year, UKTV said.

Darren Childs, the chief executive at UKTV, said: "UKTV has now grown its share of the British commercial TV market to 9.4 per cent, making our portfolio of channels vital for advertisers.

"This is the first time in the history of British television that a non-PSB channels business has played such a big role in the ratings, but expect much more from us. This is just the groundwork to ensure long term, future success for UKTV."

UKTV, which is jointly owned by the BBC and Scripps Networks Interactive, broadcasts repeats of many BBC shows but has increased the number of its own commissions in recent years.

In 2014 four of the top ten most watched shows were original commissions (Storage Hunters UK, Monty Python Live (Mostly), Dynamo: Magician Impossible and Dave Gorman: Modern Life is Goodish
