
The research, undertaken by Havas Sports & Entertainment, focused on the top five European countries that consume sport – the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
It aimed to unearth clear trends in how 12- to 35-year-olds consume sport.
The research clearly indicated that television was still the top medium for sport fans, with 98% watching sports content on TV.
Of the 98%, more than half, 57%, watched TV daily.The research found that the only medium which could compete with TV was the internet, which attracted around 53% of sport fans day-to-day.
Manufacturers of 3D and HD TV will also be pleased with the findings. The research found that 58% were using HD TV and more than 65% owned or have considered owning 3DTV.
But UK newspaper publishers will be concerned that the UK (65%) is lagging behind Italy (70%) and Spain (72%) in terms of sport fans reading newspapers to follow sport each week.
UK sport fans are ahead of their rivals on social media and the country is one of the highest Facebook-using markets in Europe, the research claimed.
UK sport fans tweet more than other European country, it claims with 13% tweeting, ahead of the European average of 9%.
The survey involved 2,000 European respondents and took place last month.
The Global Sports Forum in Barcelona starts this week and features speakers and participants from all over the world debating key issues in sport.
