It is understood that the deal, which has been reported by the and as being in the region of £19m, is to be formally announced in the coming weeks.

TechCrunch said the ink is on the deal is dry, but other reports suggest negotiations are still being finalised.

UberMedia is a California-based company. It has recently acquired other developers of products based around Twitter.

Last month, UberMedia acquired UberTwitter, the Twitter client for Blackberry and iPhone devices, and EchoFon, which automatically keeps unread tweets in sync between a user's computer, iPhone and iPad.

TweetDeck, the largest Twitter client outside Twitter’s own products, will be the biggest Twitter acquisition so far for UberMedia.

UberMedia launched as TweetUp in 2010 before it changed its name to PostUp, when it added support services for Facebook and LinkedIn. It then changed its name for a third time, to UberMedia, following the UberTwitter deal.

Bill Gross, chief executive of technology company creator Idealab, founded the company in 2010 after a series of frustrating experiences while tweeting during the Copenhagen climate conference in December 2009.
