TUC outlines rights for teleworkers in new website

LONDON - The TUC is promoting the rights of teleworkers in a new section on its website explaining the responsibilities employers have to staff using computers and phones outside of the office.

With more professionals working outside the office environment, the issue of employment rights can be cleared up by logging on to the new teleworkers' section of the TUC's website, .

This part of the website is specifically designed as an easy-to-understand resource giving voluntary and non-binding guidance. Issues covered include health and safety, working hours, claiming expenses, training, privacy and the dangers of isolation from colleagues.

The site also offers guidance to employers, who should ensure staff who telework retain union protection and are treated fairly.

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said: "Working outside the office should be an option that improves job quality for employees and brings people back into the workforce, not just a cheap option for employers."

The guidance is not binding in law and does not cover manual homeworkers.

The TUC is the umbrella organisation for 69 different unions, campaigning for workers' rights. It is holding its annual congress next week in Brighton.
