The 10-year-old crime drama, which stars David Hayman, Victoria Smurfit and Dorian Lough, is back with eight double episodes.
The first part earned a 27.7% share of the audience in the 9pm-10pm slot, according to unofficial overnight figures, which was enough to win its slot comfortably.
The audience for 'Trial and Retribution' appears to have boosted 'News at Ten's' ratings, as viewers stayed tuned to ITV1 to watch news of the Heathrow plane crash.
'News at Ten' attracted its biggest audience of the week since it returned on Tuesday night with veteran news presenter Trevor McDonald. It pulled in 4.2m viewers and a 20.6% share.
However, it was not enough to beat BBC One's own '10 O'clock News' in the same 30-minute slot, which was watched by 5m viewers and a 24.1% share.
A double bill of Channel 4's 'Jamie at Home' with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver drew 2.3m viewers and a 9.8% share in the first 30-minute instalment. The second part attracted 2.3m viewers and a 9.5% share.
Including Channel 4+1's time-shifted audience, the show was watched by 2.5m viewers and a 10.5% share for the first part, with 2.6m viewers and a 10.4% share tuning in for the second part.
