Toyota in £6m 2006 Commonwealth Games deal

LONDON - Toyota has signed up as a sponsor of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, being held next March in Melbourne, Australia.

The Japanese car firm has paid an estimated £6m to become the sixth headline sponsor, alongside National Australia Bank, Telstra, Qantas, Tabcorp and Visa.

Toyota is the only global brand on the top-tier sponsorship list, as the Visa deal will be activated on a local level via an initiative with National Australia Bank.

De Bortoli Wines has become an official supplier, while Foster's is believed to be about to sign up.

The Games' committee stated that the Toyota deal means that just over 92% of the sponsorship budget has now been met.

The organisers have taken out a multimillion-pound insurance policy to cover themselves in the event of cancellation. This covers the refund of ticket sales, worth £30m, TV rights (£34m) and sponsorship (£50m).

Next year's event is expected to raise more money than the most successful Games, staged in 2002 in Manchester, which brought in £56m in commercial revenue, double that of the previous year's event.
