Torpe is latest former Metro exec to join City AM freesheet

LONDON - Jens Torpe is the latest Metro International executive to be signed up for the launch of the new London business freesheet City AM, joining the company as chief executive officer this week.

Torpe was chief operating officer of freesheet publisher Metro International between 1999 and 2004. At City AM, he joins Lawson Muncaster, who was vice-president of global sales at Metro and is now managing director and the man who conceived the launch.

Torpe joins ahead of the newspaper's launch later this month, and is an old hand at the business, having launched 34 editions of freesheet Metro in 17 countries during his five years with the Swedish publisher.

His career has also included a long stint as marketing director for the Danish publisher Politiken Newspaper Group, responsible for the sales and marketing of Denmark's largest newspaper Ekstra Bladet and overseeing the launch of its Sunday edition in 1987. He has also spent six years at Scandianvian television network TV3.

Muncaster said: "With commercial and editorial staff in place, Jens' joining is the final piece of the strategy which will take us, with all confidence, into our most important phase. His wealth of experience in the launch and operations of newspapers across the world will be invaluable for the future success of City AM."

City AM will be distributed by hand from 6am, Monday to Friday, at key commuter points as office workers pour into City of London and Canary Wharf districts.
